A single parent at 19, she began handcrafting exquisite earrings and necklaces from old coins, bones, and beads to support her two young children Aarin and Juaquim. Laurel's unconventional approach to art and business resonated with the free-spirited culture of the '60s and '70s; her creations became bridges to friendships and patrons. Collecting Laurel Burch became a phenomenon.
