Last year, Avalon Kalin of Finesse and Glass Candy fame delivered an instrumental psych-deephouse LP on Ecstasy Records, an ambient jack full-length made of nothing but hardware synths, FX, and a Roland TR 909. These daring jack tracks, smelling sweetly of a Mr Fingers hardware set up, have been best described as Rheji Burrell covering Knights of the Jaguar by Aztec Mystic but have an ambient vibe as well. Sweeping polyrhythmic mallets and new age pads set the mood while hard circular basslines and Juno stabs climax the vibe to deliver a classic Detroit flavor. His other dance-related releases include Emotion II Emotion (Ecstasy, Skylax), and Polonaise (100% SILK) – 12 inches that tap roots techno and house while pulling from traditions like mixer dubbing and tape phasing.
