San Francisco’s Best Medical Marijuana Edibles

Medical Marijuana edibles are produced with a wide variety of options. The trick is to find edibles that contain the right balance of THC and taste, so the consumer avoids an overpowering high and a potentially expensive snack that just is not that tasty. Over a period of two months, I tried a variety of edibles at different dispensaries searching for treats that taste great, give a good high (not too strong or groggy next day feeling) and bring something new to the table with a creative recipe. Below is the guide to tasty medical marijuana treats found in local dispensaries.

Madame Munchie Macaroons
GRASSROOTS (1077 POST STREET), BASA (1326 GROVE STREET), THE GREEN DOOR (843 HOWARD STREET)
Based in San Francisco, Madame Munchie creates a stoner’s artisan paradise with five macaroon flavors, each containing 20 mg of THC for a light high. Last year, Madame Munchie won first place for edibles at the High Times Cannabis Cup in San Francisco. The macaroons are gluten free and made with local ingredients. The five flavors include hazelnut mocha, citrus a l’amande, tropical jungle, green gold and grilled PB&J.

BASA Chex Mix
B.A.S.A (1326 GROVE STREET)
The Chex Mix at Bay Area Safe Alternatives Inc. (BASA) is the perfect stoner snack for watching TV or lounging around the house. The taste of herb is unnoticeable, making it easy to consume the entire bag in one sitting (be careful!). The 3 oz. bag contains two doses and is priced at $6 while the 6 oz. bag contains four doses and it priced at $10. Eating one 3 oz. bag of the mix creates a light body high. The 6oz bag is great for sharing.

Glowing Buddha Hot Chocolate
GRASSROOTS (1077 POST STREET)
Glowing Buddha knows its chocolate, and sells a variety of treats for those with a sweet tooth. The hot cocoa powder served with marshmallows is one of the best. Containing 100 mg of THC, the hot chocolate is made for sharing. Served with cocoa and petite marshmallows, this edible is great for rainy days and San Francisco’s cold, foggy nights. Grassroots dispensary sells Glowing Buddha Hot Chocolate for $14 on its secret menu, so be sure to ask a bud tender if interested.

KIVA Peppermint
GRASSROOTS (1077 POST STREET) & APOTHECARIUM (2095 MARKET STREET)
KIVA is known for creating as they say, “a higher chocolate experience,” with an assortment of bars containing a high dosage of THC (180 mg). Each bar has four servings amounting to 45 mg with each serving. Customers can purchase the entire bar with 180 mg for about $18 or a smaller one-serving bar with 45 mg for about $6. Prices range from dispensary to dispensary. Among the best and most unique flavors are the vanilla chai chocolate, infused with traditional chai spices and vanilla beans; the mint Irish cream, made with honey and a little bit of Irish whiskey; and peppermint bark made to create a winter fresh sensation in your mouth. The peppermint bark is limited. Grassroots and the Apothecarium both carry this flavor. Eating half a dose to begin is recommended. If one consumes a full dose a drowsy high could follow.

Heavenly Honey
B.A.S.A (1326 GROVE STREET)
Heavenly Honey makes it easy to spike the afternoon coffee or tea with a little bit of cannabis. This honey is priced at $18 at BASA in NoPa and creates a very mellow, heavy eye high. One spoonful of honey is recommended for a full dosage. Cannabis, cardamom, California honey and Madagascar vanilla are used to create the honey.

House Made Sugar Cookie at Grassroots
GRASSROOTS (1077 POST STREET)
Normally I would not recommend house made edibles because they have a higher chance of tasting like pure cannabis, which could ruin the experience of eating an edible. However, this sugar cookie is sweet, light and easily breaks apart. It contains 60 mgs of THC and is made with sativa or indica. The indica sugar cookie is made perfect for those patients who want something sweet before bed.

Terra Chocolate Covered Espresso Beans
APOTHECARIUM (2095 MARKET STREET), GRASSROOTS (1077 POST STREET), B.A.S.A (1326 GROVE STREET.)
For those who can’t get enough of coffee, the Terra chocolate-covered espresso beans are a great treat. Made by KIVA confections, the espresso beans are dipped in a thick coat of dark chocolate, complementing the crunch and bitterness of the espresso bean inside. These espresso beans (5 mg per piece) create a light and fun high making it easy to still be productive. A box of the espresso beans sells for $15 at the Apothecarium.

Canna Stroop Waffel
APOTHECARIUM (2095 MARKET STREET) & THE GREEN DOOR (843 HOWARD STREET)
As a fan of stroopwafel, I had to try the waffle cone at the Apothecarium. The taste of THC is very strong and evident but does not overpower the entire experience. The waffle cone contains 80 mg of THC and is covered in a light chocolate coating on the outside with a smooth caramel filling. The most popular way to consume the waffle cone is to freeze for about twenty minutes then mix in with a bowl of vanilla ice cream. This tasty treat sells for $8 at the Apothecarium and is made by trokie confections.

Honey Granola
THE APOTHECARIUM (2095 MARKET STREET)
For those who prefer to enjoy their medibles in a healthy way, Trichrome health company offers cannabis infused granola made with oats, honey extra virgin olive oil, and cinnamon to name a few ingredients. The bag of granola contains 75 mg of THC. Honey granola pairs well with yogurt and or a topping for cereal. Half a bag of granola creates a smooth and easy high that can help to relieve stress and anxiety.
