Groove with Marcus Roberts Trio

Rhythmic vitality and playful melodies will invite you to tap your toes, lean in, and feel the beat. Marcus Roberts Trio joins New Century to bring fresh life to the music of Gerswhin and Ellington with striking cohesion. Music from two of today's leading women composers serves as interludes, each bringing their own unique sense of curiosity, reflection, and contrast. Together, the music flows between the musicians and audience, creating an irresistible surge of momentum and energy.

From the rags and stomps of the early 20th century and the two-fisted stride of Depression-era Harlem rent parties to the cascading horn-like runs of bebop and the dancing dynamics of Ahmad Jamal and Oscar Peterson, Roberts has devised a keyboard approach that encompasses just about every development in the mainstream jazz tradition. This stylistic breadth is a remarkable achievement in itself, but what makes Roberts such a singular figure is that he's translated his ambitious concept into a group setting with his long-time trio featuring bassist Roland Guerin and drummer Jason Marsalis (the youngest of illustrious New Orleans siblings). Their most recent release, New Orleans Meets Harlem, showcases the group's expansive reach, infusing the work of Ellington, Joplin, Monk and Fats Waller with vigorous new life. Quite simply, this is one of jazz's most electrifying and erudite ensembles.
