San Francisco Girls Chorus presents its annual holiday concert, Greetings From All Seasons! This year's concert will celebrate holiday traditions of multiple faiths with a selection of festive music from across the world. Music Director and Principal Conductor Valerie Sainte-Agathe will lead the combined forces of nearly 300 choristers and various featured guest artists including soprano and SFGC alumnae Michele Kennedy (1995); multi-instrumentalist and traditional music specialist Shira Kammen; Stanford University Organist Robert Huw Morgan; and Ensemble Alcatraz percussionist Peter Maund.
These popular December musical events have become a celebrated and beloved staple in the San Francisco holiday calendar. To create this year's program, Artistic Director Lisa Bielawa spent time talking with choristers in all five SFGC choral ensembles, exploring the various holiday traditions that they celebrate with their families. Through the collection of stories from choristers about their respective experiences, a unique program was formed to tell a special 'SFGC Holiday Tale.' Choristers will perform a broad variety of songs celebrating Christmas, Hannukah, Chuseok, Holi, Chinese New Year, Maslenitsa, Nowruz and Dio de los Muertos from more than a dozen countries, including the United States, Ireland, China, Haiti, Mexico, Philippines and Korea. Covering a vast selection of music from across the ages, the program includes ancient 9th century Christmas and St. Nicholas plainchant; Ladino music from the 17th century; traditional choral music by Handel, Holst and Rimsky-Korsakov; and Christmas, Hannukah and New Year audience sing-alongs.
