USF is thrilled to welcome composer Gordon Getty, Class of 1956, back to campus to celebrate the San Francisco film premiere of his fourth opera, Goodbye, Mr. Chips.
Goodbye, Mr. Chips is based on the popular 1934 novella Goodbye, Mr. Chips and other stories by James Hilton. Goodbye, Mr. Chips tells the story of a teacher at Brookfield, an all-boys English boarding school to which "Chips" dedicates most of his adult life. The film chronicles Chips' story of love, loss, and learning over his decades-long tenure at Brookfield.
Gordon Getty is an American classical music composer and librettist who grew up in San Francisco and graduated from USF. Over the years, he has stayed involved with the university as a key donor in establishing the USF Honors College and, more recently, the USF Ann Getty Institute of Art and Design.
Garnering acclaim the world over, Getty marries the traditional with an original compositional voice, creating a synthesis of the old and the new in his operas, songs, choral pieces, and piano compositions. With the 2021 premiere of his operatic film Goodbye, Mr. Chips, Getty adds a fourth opera to his list of compositions, which includes works for orchestra, chorus, and vocal and instrumental soloists. Getty's life in music is the subject of Peter Rosen's 2016 documentary There Will Be Music. Recent honors include the European Culture Prize and Opera America's Hall of Fame.
This film event is free for USF students, alumni, employees, and community members. The program will feature a pre-screening reception with food and conversation for everyone.
Complimentary self-parking will be available. Visit our event website for more information.
