Modern Eden Gallery is pleased to announce Girlhood Dreams and Darker Things, the solo debut of Bay Area artist Catherine Moore. In this new series of oil paintings, Moore explores the wonder and beauty of the human experience filtered through imagination and storytelling. Influenced by the stories and books of her childhood, personal experiences, and her study of illustration, this new series contrasts the innocence of youth with unexpectedly macabre motifs.
“I was not the little girl who was interested in Barbie dolls, tutus, or pompoms. I enjoyed horror movies, haunted houses, reading the works of Stephen King and Edgar Allen Poe, and usually preferred the villain to the hero in many books and films. ‘Girlhood Dreams and Darker Things’ is a tribute to all that I loved as a child that helped shape who I am today.
This series represents embracing what makes you happy; that ignites a passion within; that makes you, “you” even if contrary to convention. As children we are more open to see the wonder in both the darkness and the light. And sometimes it is within the darker things that we find the brightest spark.” ~Catherine Moore
Catherine Moore was born in San Leandro, California, but spent her formative, and awkward, teenage years amidst the neon lights and desert landscape of Reno, Nevada. In 1998, she returned to the Bay Area to pursue her fine arts degree and graduated from the Academy of Art University in 2004. She worked for several years as a freelance illustrator and graphic artist and began exhibiting her work in 2011. She currently lives with her husband, son, and doggy companion in San Leandro.
The opening reception will be held at Modern Eden Gallery on Saturday, December 13 from 6-9pm. Featured artist, Catherine Moore will be in attendance at the reception. Signed postcard sets of the series will be available through the gallery. The exhibition will be on display through January 3, 2015 and is free and open to the public.
