Channeling and guiding the passionate and often restless energy of teenage girls into art is a proven and potent antidote to other, less positive inner city alternatives. 3Girls Theatre aims to make this kind of constructive creativity possible for our students. Our free programming assures that all girls are eligible and able to express themselves despite their socio-economic status. In turn, their stories influence 3Girls Theatre’s playwrights and audiences by building a spectrum of many perspectives and artistry.
2017 NEW WORKS FESTIVAL: 3GT Celebrates RADICAL HOPE & THE NEW RESISTANCE
Each year we choose a theme for our New Works Festival to focus our work and help the community rally around important issues. For our sixth annual Festival, we return to the Potrero Stage (formerly Thick House) in San Francisco from August 17 – August 27 for ten days of unique original events.
But all the fighting in the world will not help us if we do not also hope. What I’m trying to cultivate is not blind optimism but what the philosopher Jonathan Lear calls radical hope. “What makes this hope radical,” Lear writes, “is that it is directed toward a future goodness that transcends the current ability to understand what it is.” Radical hope is not so much something you have but something you practice; it demands flexibility, openness, and what Lear describes as “imaginative excellence.”Radical hope is our best weapon against despair, even when despair seems justifiable; it makes the survival of the end of your world possible. Only radical hope could have imagined people like us into existence. And I believe that it will help us create a better, more loving future.
