Carnegie Hall virtuoso pianist performs "Gifts from the Darkness" in Berkeley March 16th.
On Saturday, March 16th, award-winning pianist Rebecca Bogart will perform at the intimate Berkeley Piano Club. Her program begins with gems by underrated Romantic composers Clara Schumann and Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel. It concludes with favorites by Chopin: Nocturnes and Scherzo No. 4.
Ms. Bogart was a favorite Bay Area performer until a surprise cancer diagnosis. She stopped performing to focus on the challenges of cancer treatment. After almost a decade, she entered a competition on a whim and won first prize: a performance at Carnegie Hall. Catapulted back into the saddle, she reconnected with her calling.
And now she is returning to the recital stage with a moving program of the gifts she discovered while traveling through darkness.
It includes 6 Nocturnes which depict the beauties and challenges of the night. It's also about bringing to light works by women composers.
But most importantly the music chronicles the emotional journey we take as we face darkness. It depicts the pain and struggle, as well as the insights and growth we can gain as a result.
Ms. Bogart won First Prize in the 2013 Bradshaw and Buono International Piano Competition. She has also won prizes in the Pacific and Ibla International Piano Competitions. She has played for audiences in Italy, Illinois, Massachusetts, Oregon, and Florida.
California Music Teacher described her solo CD as "more enjoyable than the barnstorming of the recent Van Cliburn finalists. With the Van Cliburn winners, each one is sending us the message, "I am a great pianist, and I am going to impress you with my virtuoso technique." With Ms. Bogart, you get the message, "I am a musician. I love these pieces and want to share them with you."
The Berkeley Piano Club is a City of Berkeley Landmark. Built in 1912, it was designed by Architect William L. Woollett who later designed the Hollywood Bowl.
$50, $70 for keyboard view, $100 for keyboard view plus pre-event lecture.
