Usually a nine-piece jazz-soul combo, Oakland's Ghost & the City's recent EP, (Tet) Sessions is a change in form. For this EP they slimmed down to only four members, which is how they'll perform this Friday at Cafe Stritch. Lead singer/keyboardist Ash Maynor moves the four-piece more toward a fusion of heavy jazz and electronica, which is most apparent on the mellow, experimental tune "(Hey) Dude Ranch". The album closes with the odd choice of a jazz-electronic reworking of the Zelda Underworld theme song (for all the video game nerds out there). Songs such as "Drift On" and "Weather" stay relatively true to their indie-soul roots, though an obviously more stripped down version of it. David Knight and Chris Turner also perform. (Amulya Datla)
