Friday Nights at the de Young, November 2

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Join us for the return of Friday Nights at the de Young! This special Fall season runs for nine Fridays from September 28–November 23. All Friday nights will feature reduced admission to the special exhibition Contemporary Muslim Fashions, and free admission to the main-level galleries. Advance tickets to the exhibition are recommended and can be purchased below.

On Friday, November 2, zombie drag queen Faluda Islam performs "Remembering Alif." Less a drag queen and more a drag comrade, Faluda's more "extra" than terrestrial and more dead than alive. She has traveled through time and space and been brought back to life from a gory encounter with American allied troops in Libya. Still donning the garb in which she was martyred, Faluda Islam has been called forth to speak to the world of today about the worlds of yesterday and tomorrow.

With his art, Bay Area artist and performer Zulfikar Ali Bhutto unpacks the intersections of queerness and Islam. As a curatorial resident at SOMArts Cultural Center, he co-curated The Third Muslim: Queer and Trans Muslim Narratives of Resistance and Resilience, and is a fall performance artist-in-residence at the Headlands Center for the Arts. "Remembering Alif," featuring costumes by Hushidar Mortezaie will begin at 7 pm, with a "talk back" Q&A with Kathy Zarur to follow. This performance is free and open to the public, but space is limited.

Inspired by the art and fashion of the show? Get your creativity on at our art-making station in Wilsey Court. A selection of food and drink will be available from the museum cafe, including halal choices and creative non-alcoholic “mocktails.” Another not-to-be-missed Friday Night experience is the Turrell Skyscape (located outside the museum sculpture garden). Beginning 20 minutes before sunset each night, viewers’ perceptions of the sky color will be subtly altered by an L.E.D. lighting system inside the chamber, and by changing light and weather conditions outside the chamber.
