SEE EVENT DETAILS
Raving Iran // Part of the film series 'Whether to remain or to leave' (Gehen|Bleiben)

A film by Susanne Regina Meures, Switzerland 2016
84 minutes / Persian, English, German with Engl. subtitles
Raving Iran follows Anoosh and Arash, central figures of Tehran’s underground techno scene. Tired of hiding from the police and their stagnating career, they organize one last techno rave under dangerous circumstances in the desert. Back in Tehran, they try to sell their illegally made music album. When Anoosh is arrested, the situation seems to be hopeless, until they receive a phone call from the biggest techno festival in the world. Upon their arrival in Switzerland, their euphoria quickly evaporates as they become aware of the gravity of their situation. The question is: will they stay or go back to Iran?

Gehen|Bleiben. Whether to remain or to leave
A series of European documentaries focusing on the topic of migration
A cooperation of the Pacific Regional Office of the German Historical Institute Washington DC at UC Berkeley, the Institute of European Studies, the Department of History at UC Berkeley, the Goethe-Institut, and the Alliance Française in San Francisco. Co-sponsored by the Northern California Chapter of the Netherlands-America Foundation.
Organized by Isabel Richter (DAAD-Professor, Department of History and Department of German, UC Berkeley) and Andrea Westermann (Research Fellow and Head of Office of the Pacific Regional Office of the German Historical Institute Washington DC)
In contrast to the large-scale, multisite, and flow-oriented projects documenting the trajectories of today’s more than 65 million international refugees, this film series focuses on the portrayal of the individuals’ everyday life, both migrants and people who are about to be forced out of their country. Focusing on personal relationships and historical background, these documentaries explore the causes and consequences of international and global migration. A place-specific, historically contextualized narrative shows that the question whether to remain or to leave accompanies people well before and long after their eventual departure. The answer to that very personal question will depend on collective possibilities.
