Fresh Kils has been an active part of the Canadian hip-hop scene for a while, both as a major behind-the-scenes producer, and as one half of Toronto hip-hop duo the Extremities. Recently, he's been getting more face time on YouTube and elsewhere, showing off his dexterous fingers, as he crafts beats on the fly: tapping the pads and twisting the knobs of his Akai Music Production Controller (colloquially known as an MPC). This gives his production the immediacy of live performance, and a chopped-up, old-school hip-hop vibe, which works well with the gritty soul and R&B samples he loads on his beat machine. His music has a moody, emotional quality that sets it apart from many other up-and-coming hip-hop producers. (Aaron Carnes)
