Fresh and Funky with the Todalo Shakers

SEE EVENT DETAILS
The Todalo Shakers play vintage jug band party blues and old time rags and stomps, which sound like they are right out of 1928 Memphis, TN. The band features harmony vocal arrangements, making for a rich, funky palette of vocal blends. The exuberance and fondness the musicians feel for their material and each other are unmistakable. Mix in hot ragtime tunes on fiddle and mandolin plus virtuoso bass slap solos, and the party gets going!

A "Todalo" (pronounced "TOE-dah-low") is closely related to "diddy-wah-diddy" and crops up in obscure old blues songs. "I'm satisfied, satisfied, my todalo shaker by my side" is from the Memphis Jug Band classic "You May Leave, But This Will Bring You Back." References to "todalo" turn up in songs by Mississippians John Hurt, Eubie Blake and Bessie Smith.

Suzy Thompson is known for bluesy fiddling and powerful vocals. She has worked with Jim Kweskin, Del Rey, Maria Muldaur and Peter Rowan. Eric Thompson plays the mandolin and began exploring country blues in the 1960s with Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions (with Jerry Garcia) and has worked with David Nelson, David Grisman and Jody Stecher. The Thompsons are from Berkeley, California.

Guitarist/vocalist Frannie Leopold has toured and recorded with the Delta Sisters and the Balkan Kafe Orchestra and teaches at many West Coast music camps. He hails from Mendocino, California.

Bruce "WB" Reid sings and plays a rare vintage 6-string banjo-guitar (affectionately known as "the enforcer"). He has toured and recorded with the Tallboys (Seattle's hottest oldtime string band) and with the Carolina Jug Stompers. He makes his home in Seattle.

Upright bassist Matt Weiner, also from Seattle, has performed with the Asylum Street Spankers, Hot Club of Cowtown, Danny Barnes and Becky Kilgore. His slap bass solos are a highlight of a Todalo Shakers performance.

A hot buffet lunch before the concert is included. Round-trip rides are available for mobility-impaired seniors.
