The internationally acclaimed exhibition "Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power 1963--1983" travels to San Francisco this fall. Celebrating the works that Black artists created during two pivotal decades in American history, this exhibition captures a turbulent time when race and identity were central issues in society, much as they continue to be today.
The opening day of "Soul of a Nation" will kick off with a Block Party held at the de Young museum, with programming throughout the day. The exhibition, as well as the museum's permanent galleries will be free for all visitors. Hear from artists featured in "Soul of a Nation", catch a musical performance, take part in wellness activities, or join in the family art-making. Artists of "Soul of a Nation" will discuss their works on view in the exhibition. These artists include: Beuford Smith, Dawoud Bey, Gerald Williams, Jae Jarrell, Wadsworth Jarrell, Linda Goode Bryant, Mike Henderson, and Richard Mayhew.
Other activities will include:
Music performances by Warriors DJ, DJ D Sharp feat. Martin Luther and Vocal Rush, Sistah Iminah, DJ Nina SOL, JAHI and THE LIFE, Ruby Ibarra, Howard Wiley, Anessa Strings, and SOL Development, dance performances with Groovemekanex, wellness activities with We The Healthiest, an art-making project with Malik Seneferu, and local makers of textiles, home decor, jewelry, and accessories, selling their wares.
