Micah Morgan is a resident artist in the African American Art and Culture Complex. From the outset, Morgan has used new media in her interdisciplinary practice which engages with visual art, and storytelling. Morgan draws on her Guyanese roots as an influence, and these threads can be seen woven throughout her work.
The African American Art and Culture Complex has invited Morgan to bring a Guyanese American perspective to our understanding and appreciation of new media storytelling practices. Morgan’s engaging with traditional vernacular allows us to engage with what it means to be a part of the African Diaspora, and challenges the idea of a static African American identity, which then produces the African American voice, and gaze. Her work is demonstrative of the powerful ways in which an artist can acknowledge culture at the nexus of art and technology, while honing her own voice and honoring community.
