Forum for Transnational Collaboration in the Visual Arts

SEE EVENT DETAILS
at McLaren Center - University of San Francisco (see times)
The goal of this symposium is to have a conversation on transnational collaboration in an era of travel bans and fierce nationalism breaking out around the world. Globalization has created problems for many populations here and elsewhere but it has also generated opportunities for greater integration of cultures and markets than ever before. The central question is: Who will control this conversation?

It is important to develop locations for intercultural communication and collaboration across national borders. This event seeks to serve as an incubator for transnational collaboration among arts professionals who have worked in cities around the world. The voices of artists, curators, and critics who do not operate in the United States and Europe need to be brought into conversations on the arts more often and more visibly. The focus of this event will be to reflect on the proliferation of contemporary artists and institutions from the former periphery in locations from Rio de Janeiro to Istanbul and Hong Kong. Artists and recently formed institutions diffuse innovations into global culture and, in so doing, transform the social dynamics and the market processes of the art world. Alternative geographies result from new cultural and economic patterns fostered by globalization. These constellations lead to unprecedented networks of engagement and participation that this forum hopes to capitalize on, and to make visible.
