Forbidden Voices: Community Women's Orchestra Concert

SEE EVENT DETAILS
at Lake Merritt United Methodist Church (see times)
Community Women’s Orchestra (CWO) will close its 32nd season with a concert featuring women singers of the University of California Alumni Chorus, to perform works by artists whose voices have historically been silenced. Repertoire includes “Street Requiem” (written for a choir of homeless singers), William Grant Still’s “Afro-American Symphony”, a world premiere by Bay Area composer June Bonacich, and “Anne Frank: A Living Voice” by Linda Tutas Haugen.

CWO and the featured chorus will perform a portion of former CWO Music Director Kathleen McGuire’s composition “Street Requiem.” McGuire composed the work while working with homeless choir members in the San Francisco group Singers of the Street. Ms. McGuire has said that the piece, co-composed with Andy Payne, draws on religious music to draw attention to and to honor the many homeless people who have passed away in the forgotten corners of our society.

Thanks to a grant from the Zellerbach Family Foundation, CWO is able to commission a new work for women’s voices and orchestra by Bay Area composer and CWO member and Composer-in-Residence June Bonacich. Ms. Bonacich composed “Sorrow is a Willow Tree,” a haunting musical reverie which features text adapted from a poem by Edyth Hope Genée. Ms. Bonacich is a Professor of composition and musicianship at the San Francisco Conservatory Pre-College Division, where she is also an alumna. Her award-winning music has been performed extensively throughout the United States.

The UC Alumni Chorus is a thriving 100 member ensemble, composed of Cal alumni, alumni of other UC campuses, and UC Berkeley faculty, staff and graduate students. They perform a wide variety of music, ranging from 16th century chamber choral works to traditional folk music and20th century musical theater. The chorus is part of the University Choral Ensembles (UCCE) organization and is directed by Mark Sumner, UCCE Director.

CWO Music Director Dana Sadava says of the collaboration between UC Alumni Chorus Members and CWO, “It is a thrill to have community members with such a shared passion for music together on one stage. We are honored to pool our talents to pay tribute to groups not traditionally represented in the classical music panoply. I know our concert audience will be moved by these diverse and profound musical stories.”?

The Community Women's Orchestra, established in 1985, is a California 501 c3 corporation. is a volunteer, all-female orchestra committed to promoting women's orchestral music in a fun and welcoming environment.
