New Century Chamber Orchestra welcomes Venezuelan-American pianist Vanessa Perez for performances that explore music written by composers under the shadow of oppressive regimes. Making her debut appearance with the ensemble, Perez will feature alongside Music Director Daniel Hope in a rare performance of Erwin Schulhoff's Double Concerto for Violin, Piano and Strings. Also featured on the program is Shostakovich's Chamber Symphony, Op. 110a, Hans Krasa's Tanec and two works by Mendelssohn: String Symphony No. 13 in C minor, "Sinfoniesatz" and String Symphony No. 10 in B Minor.
Originally scored for flute and piano soloists, Schulhoff's 1927 Double Concerto was among many banned by the Nazis following the occupation of Czechoslovakia due to the composer's Jewish descent. Schulhoff was eventually arrested and sent to Wulzburg concentration camp where he died of tuberculosis. As a result, his music disappeared and remains largely unknown. In similar tragic circumstances, Hans Krasa's Tanec was one of the last that he wrote while imprisoned at the Terezin concentration camp. Like his predecessor Schulhoff, Krasa's music was subsequently forgotten following his murder at Auschwitz. Although suffering under different circumstances, Shostakovich lived under constant threat from the authorities for much of his life. Chamber Symphony, Op. 110a is based on his 1960 String Quartet No. 8 and transcribed by the Russian conductor and violist Rudolf Barshai who earned fame and recognition for his interpretations and arrangements of Shostakovich and Prokofiev works.
