First Light Explores the highs and lows of hip-hop, the obscure and banal, with slicked up synthed over boom-bap production and spacey loops. The two emcees, Opio and Pep Love from Oakland-based Hieroglyphics collective, stay true to the alternative beats and brainy rhymes that made their group so well respected in their heyday. (1998's 3rd Eye Vision is a classic). But Opio and Pep Love also explore the low brow in a way that both pays homage to and is critical of mainstream rap, keeping one foot in the underground bohemian rap world and the other in radio-friendly hip-hop land. (Stephen Layton)
