Come enjoy the amazing display of flowers that follows oak grassland wildfires in California. The 2020 SCU Fire Complex included the Deer Fire in Morgan Territory and Round Valley. It was frightening for those who live nearby, but it was a brief set of fires that has dramatically altered the environment for annual and perennial plants. Fire-following plants will take advantage of the sudden freedom from competition and the release of nutrients following the fire and dominate the landscape--they can only be seen for a year or two before they return to the seed bank and wait for the next wildfire. We'll take a pleasant amble through several portions of Lime Ridge that burned last year to see how things have changed and talk about the value of proper fire management.
Be sure to bring plenty of water, a snack, and dress in layers. Sturdy shoes or hiking boots are recommended. Heavy rain cancels.
Due to COVID-19, we are limiting the hike to 8 participants. All participants must bring a mask and stay 6ft apart. Hand sanitizer will be available at the hike.
Participants will also be required to accept our COVID-19 Protocol (available during registration).
