Finding Klinkner, Sue’s PRINT PUBLIC project, unearths tantalizing clues about Charles Klinkner (1852-1893), one of the Golden Gate region’s early developers, a man that many loved to hate. At turns blasted as a demonic charlatan or revered as a visionary, Klinkner, in his short life, engaged promotional schemes for his entrepreneurial endeavors that today would go rival.
Mark has also created a series of historically interpretive hand-printed bookmarks that, starting in early July, will be dispersed within the shelved book collection at the Golden Gate Library. Finders will be keepers! This is the first phase of her 2 year project that explores social shifts and cycles of change at the intersection of Berkeley, Emeryville, and Oakland.
PRINT PUBLIC is an innovative place-making project partnering UC Berkeley’s College of Environmental Design, Department of City & Regional Planning, UC Transportation Center, Kala Art Institute, and local businesses to create art installations, pop-up projects, print kiosks, and innovative acts of culture to activate San Pablo Avenue in West Berkeley. Four artist-teams are developing distinct projects within the San Pablo Corridor, creating an arts-integrated approach to urban planning and community activation.
