As an artist, Erica Atreya has taken a lot of inspiration from a Frida Kahlo quote: "I am not sick, I am broken. But I am happy as long as I can paint." It's this bittersweet, multi-layered complexity that drives Atreya's own work-which she'll have on display at her show "Finding Beauty in Pain" at Bel Bacio. Her paintings are rich in color and utilize fluid motions, but she paints surreal images that connote a duality of emotions. They evoke sadness and joy, frustration and exuberance, anger and acceptance. Her characters-usually people and/or animals-have a familiarity to them, but are warped and distorted in gorgeous ways.
