Forever in India (Hippie Masala) // Part of the film series 'Whether to remain or to leave' (Gehen|Bleiben)
A film by Ulrich Grossenbacher and Damaris Lüthi, Switzerland 2006
93 minutes / German with Engl. subtitles
Forever in India explores the interface of tourism and migration in India, a booming destination for many European hippies since the 1960s. The film shows the many facets of migration and portrays the journey of six European hippies who decided to stay in India.
Gehen|Bleiben. Whether to remain or to leave
A series of European documentaries focusing on the topic of migration
A cooperation of the Pacific Regional Office of the German Historical Institute Washington DC at UC Berkeley, the Institute of European Studies, the Department of History at UC Berkeley, the Goethe-Institut, and the Alliance Française in San Francisco. Co-sponsored by the Northern California Chapter of the Netherlands-America Foundation.
Organized by Isabel Richter (DAAD-Professor, Department of History and Department of German, UC Berkeley) and Andrea Westermann (Research Fellow and Head of Office of the Pacific Regional Office of the German Historical Institute Washington DC)
In contrast to the large-scale, multisite, and flow-oriented projects documenting the trajectories of today’s more than 65 million international refugees, this film series focuses on the portrayal of the individuals’ everyday life, both migrants and people who are about to be forced out of their country. Focusing on personal relationships and historical background, these documentaries explore the causes and consequences of international and global migration. A place-specific, historically contextualized narrative shows that the question whether to remain or to leave accompanies people well before and long after their eventual departure. The answer to that very personal question will depend on collective possibilities.
