Field of View: Play

SEE EVENT DETAILS
As emerging technologies find their footing, artists and enthusiasts are often early adopters and boundary pushers. Playful and artful projects can be the impetus for pushing technology further and informing developers as to the unexpected ways creative spirits will approach their designs. And the technology can be the key for an artist realizing a complex project. Tonight, we consider this playful landscape in which wholly new universes have been crafted to prompt creativity, observation, inclusion, education, and, occasionally, designed confusion. From self-driven artist collectives researching the future of the office to new, cooperative worlds crafted by users, we will tour the inner and outer edges of new media experiences.

PRESENTERS
Kanbar Forum

7:30
eleVR
eleVR is a research group that plays with math, VR, and embodiment to find new ways of experiencing abstract concepts with concrete bodies. With a research practice that manifests as experimental—and wildy creative—projects, eleVR takes a compelling and sweeping approach to exploring the potential of immersive media technology.

8:30 p.m.
Sansar
Social Virtual Reality (VR) is a powerful emerging medium poised to redefine the boundaries separating work from play and consumers from creators. Sansar, the leading next-gen Social VR platform is at the forefront of this redefinition. Sansar's creators will break down the current state of Social VR enabled play and share an exciting vision of how we'll all be playing together in the future.

ONGOING EXPERIENCES
Bernard and Barbro Osher West Gallery, Bectel Central Gallery, and Phyllis C. Wattis Webcast Studio
6:30–9:30 p.m.

Morphogenesis (Can Buyukberber)
Morphogenesis (from the Greek morphê (shape) and genesis (creation); literally, "beginning of the shape") is the biological process that causes an organism to develop its shape. As a VR piece inspired by the phenomenon of emergence in self-organized systems, Morphogenesis consists of continuous transformation of fundamental geometrical patterns and uses them as the building blocks of immersive spaces.

VVVR (Ray McClure, Casey McGonagle)
VVVR (Visual Voice Virtual Reality) is a voice-controlled tool for self-exploration and well being. It combines VR and audio effects to temporarily free the mind from language and cultivate awareness of the present. In VVVR, two people sit across from one another and are represented in the virtual space by corresponding avatars. When either person makes sound it is translated into glowing geometry that flows from the avatar’s mouth. The vocal audio is harmonically processed and fed back through the headphones; its texture and volume determine the look and behavior of the flowing objects. The experience is immersive, entrancing, and uniquely playful.

Sansar
Explore the vastly varied landscapes of Sansar, a vanguard Social VR platform. From visiting a museum that traces the journey of the Apollo 11 to playing classic lawn games among floating islands of a garden resort to seeing precious Egyptian heritage sites captured with state of the art methods with exacting detail, Sansar offers hundreds of virtual spaces for social exploration.

Venn Diagram Museum
The Venn Diagram Museum of Geometry, Topology, and Algebra explores connections between these subjects and Venn diagrams. Interactive virtual exhibits are arranged in a virtual building with Venn diagram architecture, and there is a physical component using an actual exhibit.
