A festival of lights can have many religious and cultural meanings for people across the world. The Jewish holiday, Hanukkah and the Hindu holiday, Diwali (Tihar), both draw on the imagery of lighting lamps or candles. Culturally, many cities celebrate the change of seasons and the lengthening of days by lighting landmarks in vast and complex displays, and here at Santa Clara University, the Festival of Lights performance has marked the beginning of the holiday season for many for over a decade. The Festival of Lights program draws on many traditions, those formed here and those celebrated across the world, as it explores the changes of the seasons, a variety of holiday traditions, and many different images of light.
