Feminist Economics: Dismantling the Collective Psychic Architecture of Financialization

“Is it just me, or does everything that supports your thriving ultimately destroy your thriving?” Cassie Thornton of The Feminist Economics Department will present a performative lecture that surveys three recent projects, where she presses her whole extended body against the glass and reinforced steel of the present regime of financialization. It’s not only that most institutional support for anyone in need is bad (and that to have needs is bad), it’s also that all these forms of support are in fact created to generate speculative profit for others. From teaching feminist economics yoga, to installing collective psychic architecture, and developing a mythical feminist cryptocurrency, Thornton produces experimental pedagogy that readies collaborators, viewers and victims for revenge a future society that promotes and supports collective life over individualized techno-capital. Thornton will provide context for her recent project called The People’s Virtual Reality (2018), currently on view as part of the exhibition You had to be there, an analog virtual reality experience of the oppressive techno financial landscape of the San Francisco Bay Area where players “just can’t feel the bliss or whatever.”
