Painting from the Garden: An introduction to botanical watercolors
Learn the basic techniques for creating a botanical painting. You will spend the first half of the class observing and drawing a specimen with local artist Sally Petru. Working with fresh specimens from the botanical garden, you will create a life-size composition in graphite. The second half of the day will be spent exploring how to use just 6 basic pigments to turn your drawing into a colorful painting. Sally will demonstrate both drawing, measuring, and painting techniques so that you’ll have the basic tools to continue your work on your own. There will be a one-on-one guidance throughout the class. No art experience is required however if you have had some experience you are likely to learn something new. Bring your own lunch. A materials list will be provided. Minimum class size is 6 and maximum is 15. Some materials will be on hand for purchase.
About the instructor: Sally Petru is a botanical artist with 20 years of experience. She has taught both beginners and experienced artists around the bay area since 2011. Sally obtained her Certificate of Botanical Illustration from Filoli in Woodside. She is currently serving as President of the American Society of Botanical Artists (www.asba-art.org) and is founding President for the Northern California Society of Botanical Artsts (NCalSBA). She finds that teaching botanical art solidifies her command of this discipline and gives here the opportunity to interact with others who appreciate botanical art.
