THE ORDINARY, THE MUNDANE + THE BANALVictoria Heilweil4 Sessions>> Saturdays, September 28-October 1910:00am-1:00pm, Studio 16A, $195
What is invisible? What do we not see that is right in front of us? What can we discover, or rediscover in the everyday that is inspiring, poetic, and majestic? Photography, along with other forms of art, allows us to monumentalize the mundane. In addition, the act of photographing gives us permission to look carefully, and notice small details around us. This class will examine contemporary strategies for elevating the ordinary and the mundane using the photographic image. Strategies include abstraction, scale, repetition, the archive, and color. We will also discuss how ideas of beauty and poetry can be used to make enticing photographs of simpler subject matter. By viewing examples by other artists that exemplify these strategies such as Berndt and Hilla Becher, Nigel Poor, Neil Winokur, Byron Wolfe, Penelope Umbrico and Rinko Kawauchi, students will be inspired to complete weekly projects that embody elevating the banal using techniques covered in class.
Each class will focus on particular strategies and directions for elevating the banal using visual examples to illustrate techniques and to inspire you. Technical tips will be given in conjunction with our discussion of the everyday in photography. Students will gain a greater understanding of how scale, color, depth of field, repetition and grids, and other photographic and presentation techniques can help to elevate the mundane and represent that in an image.
You may use any type of camera in this class, including a camera phone.
____________Victoria Mara Heilweil is a nationally exhibited photographic artist, curator, and educator. Her photography transforms the mundane into the sublime. She received her MFA from California College of the Arts in 1995. Her work has been included in exhibitions at the San Jose Institute for Contemporary Art, Intersection for the Arts, Southern Exposure, RayKo Photo Center, Pro Arts and PHOTO Gallery in the Bay Area; wall space gallery and Robert V. Fullerton Art Museum in Southern California; University Art Gallery at California State University, Chico; Minneapolis Photo Center; Visual Arts Center in Portsmouth, Virginia; and Washington Square Art Galleries in New York City. She has also created public and community-based artworks in conjunction with the ZERO1 Biennial in San Jose and the Bayview Opera House in San Francisco. Heilweil was selected as an Artist in Residence at the de Young Museum in 2015.

SFAI is located in a residential neighborhood, and free two-hour parking is available on all of the streets immediately surrounding the school. The two-hour restriction cuts off at 9 pm, so evening Public Education students do not need to move their car, unless you arrive prior to 7 pm.SFAI is easily accessible via public transportation, with Muni bus lines #30 Stockton, #45 Union, and #47 Van Ness located within a few blocks of campus.Where can I contact the organizer with any questions?SFAI Public Education Staff are always happy to answer any questions you may have about the Public Education program, or our courses. What is the refund policy?Refund requests must be made in writing to [email protected].
For courses that meet for ten sessions or more, a 100% refund minus a $20 processing fee is given if written notice is received at least five business days before the first class. After five business days before the first class, an 80% refund minus a $20 processing fee is given when written notice is received prior to the third class. No refund is given after the class has met three times. Please allow two to three weeks to receive your refund.
For courses that meet for six sessions or fewer, a 100% refund minus a $20 processing fee is given when written notice is received at least five business days before the first class. After five business days before the first class, an 80% refund minus a $20 processing fee is given when written notice is received prior to the second class.
