WELDING 101: TRUSTING YOUR HANDS Tim Kopra

7:30-10:30 pm, Studio 105 + Metal Shop, $350
No prior metal skills needed. Safety is a top priority—please wear thick and/or tough pants (no shorts) like blue jeans or workpants, and closed-toed boots (steel-toed ideal). No open toed shoes, canvas shoes, or running shoes.
Explore MIG welding technology, cold working techniques and more in this introduction to working with mild steel. Class will begin with an in-depth training of the metal shop, leading to an introductory project, followed by a personal intensive final project. The introductory project will provide basic skills necessary to develop and create work with mild steel, and the final project will be of each student's design. We will first explore with paper maquettes and drawings, and then transform info a full work.

Tim Kopra illustrates an altered perspective of the social and physical infrastructure in daily life. The language of architecture and the history held in urban debris collide in his aesthetic. He uses sonic elements, and often fabricates work beyond human scale seeking to entangle viewers within banal ubiquitous material in an imaginative way, that challenge accepted notions of everyday experience. Tim received his Masters in Fine Arts at San Francisco Art Institute in the spring of 2015. He has taught with Oxbow School in Napa, California and with Edventure More Summer Camps in Oakland. Tim is an experienced fabricator and has been a shop technician at UC Santa Cruz and SFAI, and fabricated for Gordon Huether Studios, MoreLab, LAME Arts, and is lead fabricator for Cathartic Productions. Tim has been exhibiting his work since 2009 throughout the Bay Area and internationally. Most notably at the Sesnon Gallery in Santa Cruz, Gallerie Califa in the Czech Republic, Herbst Pavillon in Fort Mason, Southern Exposure and SPUR in San Francisco. He currently works and lives in Oakland, California.

For courses that meet for six sessions or fewer, a 100% refund minus a $20 processing fee is given when written notice is received at least five business days before the first class. After five business days before the first class, an 80% refund minus a $20 processing fee is given when written notice is received prior to the second class. No refund is given after the class has met two times. Please allow two to three weeks to receive your refund.
What materials (if any) will I need to bring to class?Each course requires specific materials that we ask you bring to your first class session so you can get started making right away. Materials lists are available approximately two weeks prior to the course start date. Visit the SFAI website here, click on your course title, and then click on the blue "Materials List" link underneath the course dates. If you have any questions regarding materials, please contact Public Education Staff.What are my transport/parking options getting to San Francisco Art Institute?All classes meet at 800 Chestnut Street, between Jones and Leavenworth. You can find directions to campus on the SFAI website.
SFAI is located in a residential neighborhood, and free two-hour parking is available on all of the streets immediately surrounding the school. The two-hour restriction cuts off at 9 pm, so evening Public Education students do not need to move their car, unless you arrive prior to 7 pm.SFAI is easily accessible via public transportation, with Muni bus lines #30 Stockton, and #47 Van Ness located within a few blocks of campus.I have a question that isn't on this list.
