Description

WEEKEND PAINTING INTENSIVE
Leslie Shows
3 sessions >> Friday, September 22–Sunday, September 24
9 am–5pm, $450, Fort Mason Pier 2, Studio 215
Painters often describe their work as existing between abstraction and representation, and for each painter this relationship is unique. Through readings, studio experiments, and class discussions, we will investigate the perceptual, material and philosophical aspects of abstraction in painting and 2-dimensional works. Students are encouraged to bring their own work and interests to this workshop, and explore the power of abstract imagery to amplify or complicate meaning and open up a sense of possibility and psychological space within their paintings.
___
Leslie Shows uses diverse materials such as aluminum, plexiglass, rust, ink, sand, mylar, and sulfur, in addition to paint and collage, in layered, primarily 2-dimensional works that address landscape, scale, and the illusionistic and representational capacities of materials . She has exhibited at the 2011 Mercosul Biennial, the 2006 California Biennial, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, and is a recipient of the SFMOMA SECA Award, the Artadia Award, and the Tournesol Award from Headlands Center for the Arts.
