Khotin
Since his initial moves towards house and techno genre experiments, Khotin has refined his unique slant on gentle acid and blurred yet effervescent hybrid house. While taking on the role of part manager of the label Normals Welcome, Khotin has also become a mainstay in Vancouver’s underground landscape, often throwing parties with close ties to the like-minded crew behind the Pacific Rhythm label. Khotin’s brightly hued melodic landings have led to a stream of talked about releases and remixes on labels such as 1080p, Pacific Rhythm, DFA, Public Release, Normals Welcome, Heart To Heart as well as his own self-release imprints Khotin Industries and Waterpark.

Derek Duncan aka DJ D.DEE is one of the key players in Vancouver’s burgeoning house scene. In addition to being a well-loved local DJ, he’s a record store proprietor, label boss, designer and promoter. Duncan has made his biggest mark with Pacific Rhythm, an online record store and distributor that was started with the aim of making European dance music vinyl more widely available and affordable in North America. Pacific Rhythm eventually grew into a short-lived but internationally recognized brick-and-mortar shop in the heart of Chinatown, a neighbourhood that has since become the hub for Vancouver’s house music scene. Pacific Rhythm is also a record label that proudly represents its hometown. Helping introduce the world to Vancouver artists like D. Tiffany, Flørist, Neo Image and Slim Media Player, the critically-acclaimed label has been instrumental in establishing these artists worldwide. His deep bond with the city defines his DJ sets, where he mixes the laid-back house of Vancouver with ebullient disco, funk and techno selections for a failsafe, feel-good recipe. It’s no surprise that he remains one of Vancouver’s most sought-after DJs even in the town where he plays the most.

Under the unofficial tagline “A label for music, culture and home to degenerates”, San Francisco based independent record label Public Release Recordings was founded by Eugene “Eug” Whang in 2009. The label was launched as a platform for music produced by Eug’s immediate circle of friends, and although eight years on the scope is now unmistakably international, that sense of community remains. The discography, which by the end of 2017 will comprise 16 releases, features more than 20 contributing artists including Tim Sweeney, Jacques Renault, Earth Boys, Mark E, Velvet Season & The Hearts of Gold, Eric Duncan and Force of Nature. There is no definitive sound attached to the label, but rather each release is carried out as a focussed individual project, receiving its own distinct direction and treated with the utmost care and attention to detail.
A long time DJ, Eug took on the role of “party promoter” due to not finding the exact party he wanted to frequent. He would start the party FACE in 2007, with Bootsy Harput joining him in subsequent years, aiming to bridge the gap between San Francisco’s bar and club scenes. After outgrowing its small dive bar origins, Eug moved the party into larger club venues where he has hosted notables such as DJ Harvey, James Murphy, Massive Attack, 2 Many DJ’s, Jamie XX, Daniele Baldelli, Tim Sweeney, Young Marco and many more. Regardless of the size and nature of the venue, the music policy has always been about mixing things up and offering plenty of variety. This philosophy of musical diversity and anything goes, would eventually birth the FACE party mantra – “Its not a genre, it’s a feeling”.
