“Extraordinary Ord†Film Screening and Fort Ord Discussion

Dive in even deeper to our Planet Ord exhibition with lectures, discussions and a film about Fort Ord.
At 6:30 we will have presentations and open discussions about Fort Ord with Steven Levinson and Deborah Silguero.
Steven Levinson will give a talk on Fort Ord as a training institution. He will discuss the development of skills and attitudes at the military base and how they used instruction, art and environment to impact those attitudes. He will compare this pedagogy with CSUMB pedagogy. Steven has been archiving artifacts from Fort Ord and will bring in objects from his collection including yearbooks, uniforms, photographs, maps and training materials for visitors to look through. Steven Levinson is the director of OtterMedia, president of the California Faculty Associaion (CSUMB chapter) and Co-Chair & Director of Acquisitions of the Fort Ord Collections and Archives.
Deborah Silguero was one of the first of 600 students at CSUMB on Fort Ord in 1995. During that time she discovered the story of the Fort Ord Army Morale program that included one of the largest military art departments in the country. She interviewed teachers and the director that taught over 3,000 art classes to soldiers and their dependents. She started collecting the solider art that was left behind in hopes of some day developing a Fort Ord museum on campus. Deborah Silguero teaches museum studies at CSUMB and is the Curator of Exhibitions and Collections at the National Steinbeck Center.
At 7:30 we will screen the documentary ‘Extraordinary Ord’. This documentary tells the storied history of the 18,000 acre abandoned military base by local filmmaker Eric Palmer.
