Judging by the title of their debut album, Your Light Like White Lightning, Your Light Like a Laser Beam, and the fact that it was originally released on cassette by Burger Records, it's a safe assumption that San Francisco's Extra Classic are a psych-pop band. But actually they are a reggae band—a psychedelic reggae band. These guys all have indie-rock and garage backgrounds, but actually pull off some exceptional vintage '60s/'70s Jamaican grooves. Unlike a lot of the post '70s reggae bands, Extra Classic mix in a lot of other elements to their songs, like spaces out, trippy soundscapes, and dreamy, surreal soulful melodies (performed incredibly by Adrianne deLanda.) Their new album, Showcase, features 12 tracks—six new tunes and six dub versions of those songs. (Aaron Carnes)
