Kala Art Institute is pleased to announce, Express an Interest in Listening – the latest off-site exhibition at Berkeley
Central Arts Passage. Join us for the Opening Reception on Wednesday, January 8, 6-8pm. Join us as 2014 kicks-off
Kala Art Institute’s 40th Anniversary Year.
Express an Interest in Listening presents the work of five artists – Paper Buck, Brian Caraway, Rema Ghuloum, Eric Larson,
and Linda Simmel. Utilizing the imperative command, the title cites poet CA Conrad. Conrad’s recent book, A Beautiful
Marsupial Afternoon, is a collection of somatic exercises and partnered poems.
“There’s the word ‘somatic,’ and that’s Greek and that means the tissue and the body and the cavities and
nervous system,” says Conrad. “Then ‘soma,’ which lives inside that word, is the divine. I don’t think it’s a
mistake that it lives inside of it.”
Akin to Conrad’s titular directive, the artworks in this exhibition converge in the representation of somatic experience.
Paper Buck’s new black and white photo-based works straddle legibility utilizing repeating and shifting imagery and
mixed media. Brian Caraway’s aggressively patterned and colorful panels invite an extended hang-time by way of
optics and humorous titles. Paintings by Rema Ghuloum could be records of a Calisthenics-secretary bent on
recording intimate experiences of looking in terms of color and form. Eric Larson presents collages and screenprinted
panels as two views into his practice of marking time and occupying space within a picture plane. Linda Simmel has
recently identified “longing” to be central to her current work. Her oceanscapes, over-size works on paper, are
amalgamated as near and simultaneously just out of reach.

artists and the Kala community. Working together in the vibrant downtown Berkeley Arts District, Berkeley Central Arts
Passage and Kala Art Institute are forging new connections between artists and audience.
