Essence of the Bhagavad Gita

SEE EVENT DETAILS
An in-depth study of the Bhagavad Gita, one of the major scriptures in all the world’s spiritual literature. It offers advice on the practical application of yoga in daily life and sheds light on the teachings of Vedanta, the highest vision of non-duality.
The Gita consists of a conversation between Krishna, who represents our higher nature, the teacher, or God, and Arjuna, the spiritual aspirant or individual. The discussion takes place on the battlefield, when a large war between cousins is about to begin. The battlefield symbolizes our inner conflicts as well as the struggles of daily life. Arjuna has great difficulties in facing his elders, relatives, and friends in the battle, just as we have a hard time shaking off old habits that have become very near and dear to us, even those that cause us havoc! Krishna leads Arjuna step-by-step through the various aspects of yoga and Vedanta, clarifying his doubts, and giving him tools and encouragement to boldly face the battle, i.e. face the world and himself.
The title literally means The Song of God or The Divine Song, and chanting it is quite enchanting. Mahatma Gandhi used to study this scripture on a regular basis, and Albert Einstein claimed that "When I read the Bhagavad Gita and reflect about how God created this universe everything else seems so superfluous."
In this 8-session course we will study chapter 2, which covers the main teachings of the Gita. Come early to do Gita chanting with Gajananam before class.

Gajananam
Gajananam is a direct disciple of Swami Vishnu-devananda and the founder/director of the Vishnu-devananda Yoga Vedanta Center in Fremont, CA. He began his training in the late ’80s at the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center in Tel Aviv, and became a Sivananda yoga instructor in 1989. In the ’90s, he served as a staff member and director of the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center in New York and has taught at many Sivananda Yoga Teacher Training Courses and retreats. Due to his love for chanting Kirtan, mantras and slokas, which have a wonderful uplifting vibration, with the desire to pronounce these more accurately as well as deepen his understanding of the mantras and ancient scriptures, Gajananam studied Sanskrit under the tutelage of the Sanskrit Scholar Dr. Sarasvati Mohan from 2004 through 2012. He is an excellent teacher of Bhagavad Gita and Sanskrit. Gajananam has had the opportuniy of studying Vedantic scriptures in a traditional manner at Arsha Vidya since 2013.
