ERIK JEKABSON QUINTET
FEATURING KALIL WILSON

Far more than an essential creative catalyst on the Bay Area jazz scene, trumpeter, composer and bandleader Erik Jekabson has played a key role in bringing the region's deep talent pool into the national spotlight. The founder and driving force behind the Electric Squeezebox Orchestra, he's built a welcoming sonic laboratory that's inspired a steady flow of new compositions and arrangements from its creatively roiling ranks.

He has performed at SFJAZZ in numerous formats as both leader and sideman, but to fully experience Jekabson's beautifully burnished sound there's no better vehicle than his all-star Quintet -- a band he introduced on 2017's Erik Jekabson Quintet (Wide Hive), which the Mercury News named as one of the year's best jazz releases.

For this two-night residency, Jekabson brings a joyous program of holiday favorites, joined by special guest vocalist Kalil Wilson. "Possessing a lithe and soulful sound" (Berkeleyside), Wilson is an Oakland native whose performances and residencies have taken him around the world. The son of renowned Nigerian bassist and bandleader Babá Ken Okulolo, Wilson has been steeped in music his entire life, working widely in jazz, opera, and R&B settings, releasing a pair of albums, and working with artists including Carlos Santana and jazz guitar legend Kenny Burrell.

~~~~~~~~
The Erik Jekabson Quintet performs original music by trumpeter Erik Jekabson.  The band plays modern jazz with funk, fusion and latin jazz influences.  The music is groove-oriented and has lyrical melodies, but it also has modern and sophisticated harmonies. In addition to Jekabson, the band features Dave Ellis (saxophones), Dave MacNab (guitar), John Wiitala (bass), and David Flores (drums).
Jekabson has six CDs out under his own name: his most recent album is "Erik Jekabson Quintet" (2017) on the Wide Hive Record Label. He's also co-produced and played on recordings with Electric Squeezebox Orchestra, Vista, and the New World Funk Ensemble. He's spent time on the road with Illinois Jacquet, John Mayer, Galactic, and the Howard Fishman Quartet, and has performed at such notable venues as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Algonquin Room, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Madison Square Garden, the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Late Night with David Letterman. When Erik Jekabson isn't playing and composing, he's teaching a wide variety of students and running the Young Musicians Program at the California Jazz Conservatory.
