A lot more underground rappers are reviving that classic, sample-driven, '90s-heyday hip-hop sound. Groups like the Pharcyde, Hieroglyphics, De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest come to mind. San Diego rapper Emphasize is obviously standing on the shoulders of these greats, but he takes it to strange, surreal levels, all while never losing that classic boom-bap sound. Emphasize leans heavily on jazz and soul samples but also lays down a lot of psychedelic loops. Equally weird is his penchant for positive, optimistic lyrics (weird for hip-hop, but a good kind of weird). "The Standstill Motions," his collaboration with Edgar IsReal and producer Trust One is a true gem of an EP.
