Description:
What does it mean to build, live in, and sustain community? How might we do it better??The Bay Area is home to hundreds of co-ops, communes, and intentional living communities, but it's rare that we get the opportunity to connect in one space. "Emergent Communities" is a way to bring folks together who participate in the creation of these communities to share knowledge and co-create. ?For our inaugural conference, our theme is "impact." What impact can we have together across living communities, and what can we share with those in our homes and beyond?Topics will range from the tactical - how do other houses do it? - to high level questions about the role of co-ops and living communities in society today.
Please come for what you can, and leave when you must.
Accessibility:
We want to make this space as accessible as possible for attendees, given the constraints of operating within an older building in San Francisco. Please reach out if you have any additional accessibility questions or concerns that are not listed here:
Mobility: The main conference activities will take place on the ground floor of the Red Victorian. In order to enter the space, there is a double wide glass doorway that is approximately 60 inches wide when both sides are propped open. There is one small bathroom on the ground floor that unfortunately is not large enough for a wheelchair; there are other, larger bathrooms up one flight of stairs.
Scent/allergies: The Red Victorian is not a scent free space. There is one hypoallergenic dog that lives on premise but will not be at the conference (no cats live at the facility).
Noise: The majority of the conference will take place in one main space, with occasional small breakout sessions in side rooms. There will be a quieter space available as a lounge away from the main activity throughout the conference.
Bathroom: There is one small bathroom on the ground floor that unfortunately is not large enough for a wheelchair; there are other, larger bathrooms up one flight of stairs. All of the bathrooms are gender neutral.
Childcare: Children are welcome to attend the conference. There can be a private space made available for nursing parents.
Transportation
The Red Victorian is located within a five minute walk of the N muni line, 6, 7, 33, and 43 bus lines. There are ample spaces to lock a bike outside the facility. The vehicle parking closest to the Red Victorian is limited to two hours and difficult to find on weekends.
