PEELING BACK PROFESSIONALISMEMERGENCE 2019!Monday, June 10, 201910AM—5PM at SOMARTS Cultural Center, San Francisco
Emerging Arts Professionals San Francisco Bay Area (EAP) is excited to announce our 9th annual convening, Emergence 2019: Peeling Back Professionalism. This year we look at the complex layers of professionalism—capitalism, equity, respect, commitment, control, and creativity—while envisioning new and inclusive versions of professional practice for all. Co-presented by SOMArts, Monday, June 10, 10AM to 5PM.
This year EAP asks:

What makes a person a professional?

How is the term “professional” weaponized in favor of xenophobia?

How can the term "professional" also be a demarcation of respect for your work and colleagues, or note the depth of knowledge/commitment to your creative practice?

What kind of professionalism would your ancestors get down with?

Attendees will walk away with actionable next steps, tangible tools, and a strengthened network. Join us for an inspiring day of collective strategizing and creative action!
“As the arts reflect the humanity in human history, so should the arts field reflect the humanity in how we work, plan, and connect to the world,” says EAP Director Rhiannon Evans MacFadyen. “Our network works to shift the arts field to be equitable for all people, to be a valued and sustainable career sector, and to honor the individual arts worker as a creative and whole person."
HIGHLIGHTS
Keynote: Leila Weefur is an artist, writer, and curator who lives and works in Oakland, CA, and received an MFA from Mills College. Their practice considers the complexities of phenomenological Blackness through video, installation, printmaking, and lecture-performances.
Sessions: Join workshops and roundtables on institutional support (or lack of) of professional development, the glory and the agony of code-switching, and the productive act of being unprofessional; work collectively to build an enlightened Professionalism Manifesto, a living archive, and a vision of a better arts future!
Light breakfast, snacks, and refreshments will be provided on-site.
