Elvis Presley was a giant of entertainment and culture - he changed rock n roll and society at large when he burst on the scene in the latter 1950s, but by 1968, he had become irrelevant. His recent music was recorded for movies whose quality had long declined from highlights like Viva Las Vegas. His controlling manager Colonel Tom Parker didn’t care about music, only about money. Elvis went against has manager’s wishes, and with a youthful creative team, produced a television show that rocketed him back to his earlier status, and sparked future years of great music and live concerts. Singer Presents...Elvis, now known as the '68 Comeback Special, aired on NBC in December 1968 - now 50 years later, San Francisco’s Elvis Presley Tribute celebrates this iconic, crucial time in Presley’s career, with a night of live performers and DJs playing original recordings from the King’s career.
