Four Barrel Coffee is pleased to present 'Edges'. In this group show, four artists working in various black and white drawing mediums explore human and nature subjects from a variety of perspectives. The artists demonstrate the lesson that in drawing and in nature there are no lines, only edges.
San Francisco artist Annamarie Pabst realistically, thoughtfully, and beautifully renders mugshot portraits of prisoners of the 1970’s Cambodian Genocide. Her high contrast style exaggerates the edges of light hitting the faces of the subjects, and allows the forms of the faces to emerge out of the surrounding darkness. Her subjects are captured in a desperate place, existing near the edge of death and disappearance.
Portland based Alice Marshall also includes realistic portraits: her subjects, birds native to her home state of Oregon, are rendered meticulously and delicately with graphite. She captures them at rest during the day’s hunt: still, but with purpose. Wild and independent, Alice’s birds are also living on the edges of survival.
San Francisco artist Dean Carpenter brings realism to a wider scope with his charcoal landscapes and urbanscapes. Every detail, from the center of focus to the edge of focus, is carefully addressed by Dean’s intricate eye. He gives an emotionally vivid and provocative glimpse at a single, mundane moment, telling a visual story of heightened perception.
San Francisco based Justin Teisl adds formal experimentation to the show with his black and white ink treescapes. Layering repeated images and mirrored images drawn on translucent film on top of each other, he creates vibrating edges and implies shadows and shifting perspectives. The metaphors of his meticulous process are many, and they are reflective of his personality and his convictions.
Join us on Friday, June 30th from 6-8pm for the opening reception of this exhibition. Drinks will be served and the artists will be in attendance.
