Edward Simon Trio

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Described as "the best of us all" by no less an authority than Cuban piano giant Chucho Valdés, pianist and SFJAZZ Collective member Edward Simon brings his supremely inventive trio for one night in the Joe Henderson Lab.

A native of Punta Cardón, Venezuela, Simon moved to New York in 1989 and worked extensively as part of Bobby Watson's Horizon and the Terence Blanchard Group while doing sideman work with artists including Greg Osby, Bobby Hutcherson, Paquito D'Rivera and Herbie Mann. He co-founded the band Afinidad with saxophonist David Binney that navigated the intersection of modern jazz with Brazilian forms and contemporary classical music, and his desire to explore traditional folk music of his homeland resulted in the formation of Ensemble Venezuela in 2003, and his most recent album, Femininas, is devoted to the works of great Latin American women composers.

In 2010, he joined the SFJAZZ Collective and was awarded a Guggenheim fellowship the same year. Over his career, Simon has led several trios, each a powerhouse unit made up of the finest instrumentalists in jazz. The one he brings to this performance is no different.

Pianist Edward Simon - a native of Venezuela who has made a name for himself over decades in America as a jazz pianist, bandleader and composer-arranger, along with being a Guggenheim Fellow and member of the hit SFJAZZ Collective - has created fresh, supple interpretations of melodies from all over Latin America. His latest album Latin American Songbook won him an NAACP Image Awards for 'Outstanding Jazz Album'. For this performance, Simon's trio features two of the most distinguished players from the Bay Area: drummer Alan Hall and bassist Peter Barshay. The trio's subtly virtuosic performances brim with lyricism, color and groove.
