Earth: Holiday Music of Eastern Europe

SEE EVENT DETAILS
This December, join the Sacred and Profane Chamber Chorus for the first concert of our 37th season! In "Earth: Holiday Music of Eastern Europe," we present the listener with a festive array of richly resonant chants, carols, and hymn.

Our diverse program will feature the familiar and the rarely heard: from the florid chant-based works of Russian composers Rachmaninoff and Chesnokov to the folk-influenced works of Armenian composers Komitas and Khorenatsi, from the mix of West and East in the music of Hungarian composers Kodály and Bárdos to the modern innovations of Górecki and Dychko. Our concert will also include arrangements by the popular local Balkan women’s chorus Kitka, and much loved Ukrainian Christmas carols, including the original Carol of the Bells.

ABOUT SACRED AND PROFANE:

Founded in 1977, Sacred and Profane is a chamber chorus that performs a wide variety of a cappella choral music. Concert repertoire includes sacred and secular works from the Middle Ages to the contemporary period, drawing from classical, ethnic, and folk traditions. The chamber chorus aims to provide an inspiring and educational experience for audiences and chorus members through innovative programming, intensive preparation and high quality performances. Sacred and Profane is currently composed of 25 singers, each of whom brings a high level of experience and musicianship to the chorus. It is supported in part by generous grants from the Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation, the City of Berkeley Civic Arts Commission, and the Alameda County Arts Commission.
