March 14 at 2:30pm and 7:30pm, March 15 at 2:30pm
Presented by Gamelan Sekar Jaya and ShadowLight Productions in association with the Presidio Theatre, Drupadi is a woman-centered retelling of the Mahabharata's central arc, as presented in cinematic shadow in celebration of Women's History Month. Don't miss this unique collaborative performance featuring acclaimed storyteller Brenda Wong Aoki, director Larry Reed, choreographers Emiko Saraswati Susilo and I Made Suteja, production designer I Dewa Putu Berata, and music for gamelan semar pegulingan composed by I Dewa Putu Berata.
This unique Women's History Month collaborative performance explores themes that traverse continents and centuries: from India to Bali; ancient history to the twenty-first century. Drupadi tells her own story, and we see the men's world of the epic through the eyes of a powerful woman, who takes all five Pandawa brothers as her husbands and equals, transcends unspeakable humiliation at the hands of the Kurawas, and bears witness to the devastation of cataclysmic war.
A company of Gamelan Sekar Jaya dancers, led by Guest Dance Director I Made Suteja, and a complement of ShadowLight artists will bring the magically unwinding story of the Mahabharata to life on a massive shadow screen. The performance features live music for the Balinese iron metallophone gamelan semar pegulingan ensemble, composed by Gamelan Sekar Jaya Guest Music Director I Dewa Putu Berata.
Featuring Brenda Wong Aoki
Written by Zara Houshmand
Directed by Larry Reed
Choreography by Emiko Saraswati Susilo and I Made Suteja
