at Kala Art Gallery (see times)
Kala Art Institute is excited to present DONUT TALKS, a new series featuring artists from our Fellowship and Artist-In-Residence programs during their studio residencies. DONUT TALKS are free of charge and open to the public. And coffee and donuts will be served, thanks to our sponsor, Pepples Donuts!

On Saturday, May 30, current Fellowship artists Lea Cetera and Rodrigo Valenzuela will present an artist talks about their recent work and projects in progress during their Kala residencies. Lea Cetera will be in the Kala Project Space and will use the studio space as an ongoing film set, filming and creating and experimenting with an open narrative form, utilizing a public studio space as well the audience as a way of creating a filmic exquisite corpse. During Rodrigo Valenzuela’s residency, he has been using a neighborhood salvage store as his photo studio, expanding on his creative practice that expands the contradicting traditions of documentary and fiction.

Lea Cetera works in video, sculpture and performance to produce temporal video installations that examine the space between object and body, public and private, the virtual and real. Utilizing techniques culled from theatre, film and puppetry, her work investigates constructed identities, the object, technology, alienation, fantasy and role-play. Cetera has performed and shown work in the USA and internationally at venues such as Sculpture Center, The Jewish Museum, Disjecta Contemporary Art Center (Portland, OR), Pilar Corrias (London, UK), Southard Reid (London, UK), Simone Subal, High Desert Test Sites (Joshua Tree, CA), Poetry Project at St. Marks Church on the Bowery, Anthology Film Archives and participated in Portugal Arte 2010 and the New Wight Biennial 2012. She holds an MFA from Columbia University, 2012 and a BFA from the Cooper Union School of Art, 2005. She lives and works in New York City.

Rodrigo Valenzuela is a Chilean artist living between Houston and Seattle. Rodrigo holds a BFA in photography from The University of Chile , a BA in Philosophy from The Evergreen State College and an MFA in Photomedia from the University of Washington. He is currently a Core Fellow at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. His work has been shown at MOCA Miami, National Academy Museum in New York, North Dakota Museum of Art, Henry Art Gallery, El Museo Cultural de Santa Fe, COCA Seattle and more. Rodrigo is also an alumni of the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture , Vermont Studio Center, Bemis Center for Contemporary Art and Clark College. During 2015 Rodrigo will have solo shows at the Contemporary Art Museum in Santiago, Chile, The Frye art museum in Seattle WA and UPFOR gallery in Portland, Oregon.
