Don Ross with Michael Manring & Glass House

SEE EVENT DETAILS

Don Ross

Canadian guitarist Don Ross is the reigning godfather of modern fingerstyle guitar. The only guitarist to win the prestigious U.S. National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship twice, Don’s music has been enormously influential. His CD, Passion Session, is as iconic in the modern fingerstyle guitar genre as Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue was in jazz or Sgt. Peppers was in pop/rock. Don tours extensively worldwide. This show, his first at the Freight, celebrates the recent release of his new CD, A Million Brazilian Civilians.

Michael Manring

Widely-revered as one of the most innovative and original bassists in the world, Michael Manring has been pushing the boundaries of what’s possible on the bass guitar for over
three decades. He has been awarded two gold records, numerous readers poll awards and Bass Player magazine's "Bassist of the Year"; Building on the conceptions of his teacher, the late bass legend Jaco Pastorius, Michael has developed a new approach to the instrument that includes unorthodox tunings, techniques and methodologies. He has honed his skills on hundreds of recordings as a session musician and thousands of concerts throughout the world.

Glass House

"An amazing duo with an intimate yet powerful approach"(Critical Jazz), Glass House is a performing tour de force of Mark Vickness’ intricate, layered modern fingerstyle guitars and David Worm’s soaring, blues-inflected vocals. A founding member of Bobby McFerrin's Voicestra, David continues to perform with McFerrin internationally. He has over fifty recording credits as a session singer, vocal percussionist, and writer. His original music has been recorded by groups nationally and internationally. Mark has a bachelor's and master's degree in composition, years as a performing jazz guitarist, composer and arranger, several film scores and two decades writing, recording and performing with Glass House. His solo CD, Places, has garnered widespread critical praise. Acoustic Guitar Magazine wrote, “Vickness' uncanny ability to evoke the complex emotions linked to these times and places transcends the specific and catapults his travelogue into the universal. A varied and virtuosic “photo album” of remote, gritty, and mystical locales, Places traces a map of Vickness’ emotional life, while sketching the subtle and winding pathways creativity takes on its way to fruition.”
