In 2011, Phoenix's Dogbreth put out their weird acoustic-punk debut album Chookie (named after the singer's grandmother). It is packed with the juvenile goofiness of Dead Milkmen, the nerdiness of They Might Be Giants and the childlike innocence of Jonathan Richman. (In album closer "Rockin' with Grandma" the singer recalls driving in Grandma's car, while the two listen to the Beach Boys.) Since then, they've clicked on the distortion pedal and started creating something that could almost pass for pop-punk, though the oddball vibe remains the same. Powerkindness, they call their sound. A better name might be power-dorkness. That's meant in the best way possible, mind you.
