Do Not Fear the Past
featuring Donita Volkwijn, soprano and the Astraeus Quartet
Featuring soprano Donita Volkwijn, the Bay-Area based Astraeus Quartet, and texts read by Stanford students, this performance is a reflection on the story of Amy Biehl (1967-93), a Stanford undergraduate alumna and Fulbright Scholar who died in the lead-up to South Africa's first democratic election. A newly commissioned piece by distinguished South African composer Bongani Ndodana-Breen anchors a program that explores heartfelt responses to tragedy and urgently seeks ways forward. Ndodana-Breen's new work, "Do not fear the past," renders Zuhura Seng'enge's poem of the same title in a setting for soprano solo and string quartet.
