The Lab presents the Division of Labor Festival 2013 - 8 nights of experimental music, performance, and art. Division of Labor Festival runs from Thursday, June 13th through Friday, June 28th for three weeks of ambitious adventures in sound and performance. Tonight's event features Russian Tsarlag, Humanbeast, En, and DJ Obscuratron.
RUSSIAN TSARLAG (Providence)
Sci-fi horror pop from the “tsarcastically gurggling monotone hillbilly zombie” formerly living as Carlos Gonzalez. Crafting “enchanted pop anthems for monstrous inhabitants of a dying Earth”, his performances are queasy the way only untrustworthy occult practices can be. He may bring the legless to their missing feet, but everyone else feels suddenly strangely sullied in the end. Russian Tsarlag is based in Providence, Rhode Island.

HUMANBEAST (Providence)
“A push and pull of beauty and ugliness at work, in the lyrical content, the noise/music tension within their sound. [...] Precisely a meditation on what it’s like to be human (a human beast),. Scary, gross, and gorgeous at the same time.” -WFMU blog

EN
En is the duo of San Francisco based multi-instrumentalists Maxwell August Croy (who runs the local record label Root Strata) and James Devane. The pair utilize a wide range of instrumentation - koto, guitar, vocals, rhodes, melodica, and piano, among other devices - which is processed and refined into rich walls of reverberant bliss. At times soothingly ambient, others melodically cacophonous, their music often evokes the unplaceable nostalgia associated with the imaginary landscapes of memory.
